By Jim Boyce | There are dozens of places around the planet to indulge in some libations on August 9, World Baijiu Day. Here are three of them.
Join Vinn in Portland on August 9 for drinks, eats and learning. You can try samples from Vinn, the sole distillery producing baijiu in the United States, one using a family recipe that dates seven generations. Baijiu cocktails, too!
You can also enjoy food courtesy of a pop-up by Danwei Canting, a Chinese restaurant slated to open this October. See how a tasty treat like lamb kebabs goes with baijiu.
Finally, there’s that learning. Along with fun facts about baijiu, participants can also learn the differences between the search engines Google and Baijiu, courtesy of WeWorks.

Restaurant R&D in Toronto has a pair of baijiu cocktails on offer. The Baijiu Sour is part of the regular menu and includes hawthorn-Mandarin orange syrup and egg white. The other drink is part of the Lucky 7 lineup—available for $7 from 5 PM to 7 PM daily—and goes by the regal name Imperial Fizz. That one includes yuzu marmalade and cilantro. R&D also lists baijius Red Star and Fenjiu. See the website here.
In Hong Kong, swing by Tycoon Tann to try cocktails using two of China’s most famous baijius. The Salty Mandarin Lemonade includes Wuliangye along with vodka, honey, fresh Mandarin orange, lime and lemonade. Meanwhile, the Chi Pao features Moutai with Michter’s Rye, apple, cinnamon, egg white and bitters. Tycoon Tann also has a number of baijius available by the bottle. See the website here.
