By Jim Boyce | Paul Mathew of London’s The Hide Bar, a venue that joined last year’s inaugural World Baijiu Day, will lead a class next week that includes special guest Charles Lanthier of HKB (Hong Kong Baijiu). The event runs 2 PM to 4 PM and will have at least a half-dozen baijius, including New Zealand brand Taizi. For details and to sign up, see this Facebook events post.
Mathew is well-versed in China’s national spirit. Last year, he led a baiju class with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. And during a stint in Beijing several years ago, he consulted with Diageo on its baijiu brand Shui Jing Fang. See more of his thoughts on baijiu here.
This year, Both The Hide Bar and sibling venue Demon, Wise & Partners will host World Baijiu Day events. More details soon. In the meantime, here are some pics from last year’s WSET class.
Founded in 2015, World Baijiu Day is held each August 9, with events in over 60 cities so far. Follow WBD on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And get in touch via spirit (at) worldbaijiuday.com.
