Christchurch doubled down for World Baijiu Day this year with a pair events that celebrated this unique spirit.
On August 8, the day before World Baijiu Day proper, Glenn Schuitman organized a trade tasting, featuring local baijiu brand Taizi, at bar Gin Gin. Schuitman has been involved in WBD since year one, hosting parties and tastings at his former venue Pop-Up Beijing three straight years and then at nearby Herbal Bar before bringing that spirit to New Zealand when he returned home. Last year, that meant teaming up with the Taizi guys for a tasting at their production center, then this year introducing the baijiu to people in the bar trade.
On August 9, the guys from Taizi swung into action as owner / brothers Sam Lu and Ben Lu headlined a night of telling stories, sipping baijiu and enjoying Chinese dishes. (Taizi recently won two major accolades at the New Zealand Spirits Awards.) The event tasting and dinner banquet was organized by Canterbury’s branch of the New Zealand China Trade Association.
Founded in 2015, World Baijiu Day is held each August 9, with events in over 60 cities so far. Follow WBD on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And get in touch via spirit (at) worldbaijiuday.com.
