There is no shortage of baijiu in Beijing. Here are three places to have a sip or two during World Baijiu Day. In fact, these venues are so close together you could easily take a leisurely stroll and visit all three.
The Rug Cafe. These comfort food experts hosted a guided tasting by boutique producer Guanyun last year, followed by a pairing with with five fusion dishes from The Rug, such as sous vide pork with soba noodles and a pearl milk tea-based dessert. Give it a try yourself. Pop into The Rug, order a glass or two of Guanyun and try it with a few dishes, like the ones above or specialties like the mapo tofu pizza (below) or mapo tofu nachos. And if you start The Rug’s Sanlitun branch, you can easily walk to the next two spots.
Burge’s Bistro & Bar. This newcomer across the Intercontinental Hotel Sanlitun has a relaxed atmosphere and quality cocktails, including a refreshing baijiu concoction with Osmanthus oolong tea, lime syrup and soda. A past project by the owners in this same spot had more than a dozen baijiu cocktail options, so the adventurous might want to ask the staff to make something special.
Superfly. This Sichuan-inspired restaurant and bar in Opposite House Hotel features the baijiu cocktail Erguotou Fizz. Along with Beijing baijiu favorite erguotou, this one includes mezcal, vodka, vanilla, lemon, Sichuan peppercorn and homemade hawthorn syrup. Superfly also has a range of baijius available by bottle and glass, including from Guizhou, Shanxi and Sichuan, plus a new infused baiju called 白8.
